Line editing addresses issues in your completed manuscript at the sentence and paragraph level. Although a line edit is intended for works that are considered complete, I may also identify issues that require revision of your content.
I will correct the technical aspects of your manuscript, including grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, syntax, word usage, style, redundancy, and repetition.
I will also edit your work for the following:
Are your times and dates consistent? Do your character’s physical traits change? Is your story set in a frozen world, but everyone is wearing shorts?
Are your sentences unwieldy? Will a reader have to read a sentence more than once to understand it?
Is your language appropriate for your story? Do you use anachronisms? Clichés?
Does your dialogue flow naturally? Is it appropriate for your story and the genre? Is it culturally accurate?
Are all your sentences the same length? Are they evenly balanced?
Are your antecedents unclear? Are you unintentionally vague?
SHOWING VS TELLING
Do you tell when you could be showing? Show when you could be telling?
Are your characters and world sufficiently detailed? Too detailed? Described using the wrong kind of details?
THE FIVE SENSES
Do you use all five senses enough? Too much?
Are historical or contemporary details correct? Are your descriptions of people, places, and things accurate?
Do your following sentences support your opening sentences? Do your chapters end where they should? Will they make the reader want to turn the page?
SEX AND ROMANCE
Is your sex sexy? Is there enough tension? Is your word choice appropriate? Is your language immersive or jarring? Do you give enough detail? Too much detail? Is your romance believable? Or just a platform for sex?
I will also highlight any other issues that may arise.
WHAT THIS SERVICE IS: A line edit identifies and corrects technical aspects of your writing and concerns regarding consistency, phrasing, language, dialogue, sentence variation, ambiguity, showing vs. telling, details, using the five senses, facts, paragraph and sentence structure, and facets of sex and romance.
WHAT THIS SERVICE IS NOT: Although I will comment on aspects of your content, I will not evaluate your story as a whole, or explore elements such as plot, conflict, theme, etc. Line editing is not a substitute for beta reading or substantive editing.
WHAT YOU WILL RECEIVE: You will receive a Word document with Track Changes and a Summary Report briefly describing any particular concerns. Report length will vary based on the scope of your work and the improvements needed.
